The research team of Professor Choi Sewan from the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology (Seoul Tech) has won the 1st Prize Paper Award in IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL), a top-tier journal in the field of power electronics. This result marks the second consecutive year that Professor Choi’s team has been recognized, following their 2023 IEEE TPEL 2nd Prize Paper Award.

The prize is the highest honor given annually by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power Electronics Society, and it is awarded the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics during the year d on originality and contribution to the field. In 2023, the journal received more than 3,600 submissions, resulting in 1,057 published papers, of which five were selected as the 2024 1st Prize Papers.

The research team, consisting of co-authors Dr. Lee Jae-yeon (Hyundai Mobis), Dr. Jeong Hyeon-Ju (Hyundai Motor Company), and Dr. Tat-tang Le (FPT), was recognized for their paper d Three-Phase Single-Stage Bidirectional CCM Soft-Switching AC-DC Converter With Minimum Switch Count. Each winner received a plaque and certificate, and the research team was awarded a USD 1,000 cash prize.

This paper presents a three-phase bidirectional single-stage AC-DC converter that can be applied to electric vehicle chargers and ESS systems. By integrating the conventional two-stage power conversion (AC-DC and DC-DC) into a single stage, the team’s innovative research dramatically reduces costs by reducing the number of devices, enabling the converter to be half the size of existing commercial products while improving efficiency.

The award ceremony took place on Oct. 24, 2024, at IEEE ECCE 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. This award again demonstrates Professor Choi Sewan and his lab’s outstanding research achievements and international reputation.

Professor Choi Sewan’s lab (https://pel.seoultech.ac.kr/index.do) has been selected as a joint research center by Hyundai Motor Company and Infineon and is conducting world-class research and projects in the field of electric vehicle chargers and converters in collaboration with global companies.
