Announcements on SeoulTech’s response to the new coronavirus

COVID-19 is a respiratory infection that started in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has since spread rapidly to all parts of China and the rest of the world. Initially, it was known as an unknown respiratory epidemic but the World Health Organization (WHO) defined the respiratory disease as a novel type of coronavirus on January 9, 2020 (officially named the SARS-CoV-2 by the International Virus Classification Committee on February 11).

The Chinese government confirmed person-to-person infection after 15 medical personnel in Wuhan were confirmed to have the virus on January 21, 2020. Therefore, the infection of medical personnel became one of the main indicators for person-to-person infections. As the virus continued to spread, the WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on January 30 and recognized the spread of COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11. This is the third pandemic designation since the Hong Kong Flu of 1968 and the H1N1 Pandemic of 2009.

SeoulTech has created an Epidemic Management Committee and Epidemic Management Task Force in response to COVID-19.

The following are announcements posted by the SeoulTech Health Center:

● Courses are suspended for two weeks (Start of Courses March 16 / End of Courses June 26).
● The placement and supply of masks, hand sanitizers, thermometers and other preventive resources have been prepared.
● Reporting abnormal conditions and checking the health status of each individual upon entering buildings will be done on campus.
● The creation and operation of a live epidemic status monitoring system
● The operation of Task Force Headquarters (970-7000) and Emergency Contingency Headquarters (970-7120)
● The disinfection of each building on campus
● Continuous announcements through manuals, reports, and text messages
● Broadcasting reports and displaying public posters and banners
● Education on reporting and response protocols provided to each undergraduate, graduate, and faculty member
● The operation of a monitoring group for professors, research assistants, faculty members, and students
● Cooperation with health authorities
● Dormitories: support for students coming from China in self-quarantine (123 students expected in the last week of February)
● Department of International Education: checks on the movement of students coming from affected countries, and maintenance of contact information (A total of 245 students)
● In case of emergencies, go to the student examination center located in the parking lot of the Second Student Council Center or call (970-7120).

Examination centers located off campus are the Nowon Health Center near Nowon Station, the Nowon Eulji University Hospital near Hagye Station, and the Inje University Sangye Baek Hospital near Jungye Station.

Study rooms at the Central and Annex Libraries are prohibited from entering from Feb. 26 until further notice. However, access to books are available and lockers can be accessed after contacting faculty and security personnel.

Due to COVID-19, the fine dust public automobile restrictions are temporarily suspended and the Nowon #13 bus will be restricted from entering the campus.
Finally, students who have traveled to China, Hong Kong, or Macao will temporarily be suspended from attending courses after entering Korea. During this period, if anyone has  symptoms, please visit the respective health centers or call 1339 and report to the school as soon as possible.
