Architecture Major Professor Lee Yong Joo Receives the 2020 German iF Design Award

SeoulTech Engineering College Architecture Major Professor Lee Yong Joo (Lee Yong Joo Architectural Studio) received the internationally renowned iF Design Award’s architectural award for his ‘Root Bench’ project. The iF International Design Forum located in Hanover, Germany is an independent design institution that has selected the best worldwide design projects each year since 1953. The iF Design Award is one of the world’s three prestigious design awards along with the US IDEA and German Red Dot Awards.

The ‘Root Bench’ is a uniquely creative wooden network of benches that resembles the roots of a tree, serving as both public art sculpture and public architecture. The dynamic design of the piece is the result of a computer algorithm. The ‘Root Bench’ was selected as an awardee by 78 professionals comprising the selection jury. There was intense competition as more than 7,298 projects from 56 nations were considered for the award.

All selected projects are displayed online through the iF World Design Guide and can also be seen at the iF Design Exhibition held in Berlin, Germany.
