* Full text of President Kim Jongho’s commencement speech
Graduates of the Seoul National University of Science and Technology should become protagonists in creating bright future societies.
Dear graduates,
I would foremost like to sincerely congratulate you for your honorable graduation. During today’s commencement for the first semester of the 2017 school year, 41 doctoral, 275 master’s, and 1,897 bachelor’s degrees will be awarded. I am confident that you will play pivotal roles in various fields where you will start a new life as proud alumni of the Seoul National University of Science and Technology or SeoulTech. I can feel deep in my heart how much you have sincerely pondered and decided on your career path and spent your time at the university to this day. Good job! I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to your family and parents for their devoted love and support during your years at the university.
My dear graduates,
SeoulTech has developed in amazing ways while you were studying here. In all kinds of evaluations, we were ranked within the top 20 universities nationwide. In particular, our graduates’ reputation has been evaluated to rank within the top 400 schools by the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in 2017, which rank universities worldwide. As such, our graduates rank within the top 1.5% among graduates of distinguished universities worldwide. These are indexes that show the global competitiveness and excellence of our university and graduates. You, who will graduate today, are the protagonists who have made this great achievement. Therefore, I extend my deepest gratitude to you all for having led the amazing development of our university. We, the staff of SeoulTech, will work harder so that the status of our university would continue to rise and so that you may work in all parts of society with great pride.
Dear graduates,
I would like to convey three messages that will somehow help you in your future life while congratulating you on your graduation.
You have accumulated much knowledge and experiences while at the university. Once you get a job, you will need more knowledge and wisdom. New information will pour in daily, and you will be challenged to adapt to changes that will occur so rapidly that they will be scary for you. No one can predict the future society that you will be filled with fear about the uncertain future.
Therefore, you must always prepare for changes. If you do not prepare in advance, you should at least follow the changes. Dale Carnegie, the best writer on human relationships of the United States who left the famous saying that “discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success,” also stated that opportunities come to those who are prepared. Although successful people always say they “coincidentally” succeeded or “were lucky,” even coincidence and good luck do not come to those who are not prepared. If you give your best every moment of every day, many opportunities will come to you. There is no single person who did not have opportunities. They just did not catch the opportunities that came their way.
Dear graduates,
At the university, you could get good results by studying on your own because the goal here is to enhance your competency. Although results are important at school, what is more valued here is doing one’s best. However, once out in the world, the results, not the process, will be valued. At work, no matter how much you try alone, you will not be able to bring better results than groups with good teamwork. Roman playwright Plautus once said, “No man is wise enough by himself.” For you to achieve something, you will need much knowledge, and you will not be able to possibly learn all the knowledge out there. At work, you will need to cooperate with others with different skills and knowledge to comprehensively achieve something together. Thus, it will be very important for you to cooperate with colleagues with different skills, knowledge, and tendencies. Our graduates have been very highly evaluated in this aspect. Therefore, our graduates are recently becoming highly preferred by employers. I hope you will also double your capabilities by engaging in teamwork in your jobs.
Last but not least, I would like to speak about habits. Successful and happy people are said to have good habits. Today, I would like to introduce a few of them that can help you:
“The habit of imagining good results in your mind; the habit of attentively listening to others; the habit of interacting with positive and active people; the habit of quickly solving problems; the habit of not fearing attempting something for the first time; the habit of thinking you are lucky; the habit of being polite; the habit of valuing the basics; the habit of complementing and thanking others; the habit of preparing; and the habit of dividing large problems into pieces and solving them.”
I hope you will try to make these habits a part of you. You will experience small and large achievements and failures in the future. When faced with a difficult situation, think about these habits and take courage. If you need help, ask for advice from your professors or other people to bravely overcome difficult situations and become proud members of society because infinite possibilities and new paths are open before you.
My dear graduates,
I hope our campus will be remembered beautifully and preciously as a place where you have devoted your passion and youth in your 20s after entering the university full of dreams and hope. Please continue to show interest and love for your alma mater while keeping the precious memories deep in your hearts. Your alma mater will also not forget you and will forever support you.
Once again, my heartfelt congratulations to you on your graduation. I wish you much luck and happiness in your future.
