Professor Nam Soo Heo of Seoul National University of Science and Technology wins consecutive nuclear core equipment safety evaluation research projects from USA’s Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

- Signed joint research agreement for joint research and exchanges

□ Professor Nam Soo Heo of the Department of Mechanical System Design Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech) has been awarded a research project from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for the 2nd consecutive year to develop safety evaluation technology for key devices in nuclear power plants.
 
□ Since its establishment in 1972, EPRI has been recognized as a leading global energy research institution that has demonstrated international leadership in the evaluation of material reliability and safety of core equipment in nuclear power plants.
 
□ Professor Heo and SeoulTech have been conducting joint research and exchanges with EPRI since 2022.
 
□ Professor Heo’s research team has been working on the first phase of research to revise the evaluation procedure for piping systems of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code), an international standard for the design and evaluation of nuclear equipment, since 2022. The team recently successfully completed this phase and plans to further enhance the evaluation through the second phase of research.
 
□ In particular, for this second phase of research, Professor Heo’s research team plans to incorporate a defect simulation system being developed by a domestic industry consortium led by the team as part of the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. K-CLOUD support project.
 
□ Professor Heo has stated that “The utilization of the domestically developed unique defect simulation system in the international technical standard revision research holds significant meaning, as it acknowledges the research capabilities of the domestic nuclear industry and research on a global scale.”
 
□ Professor Heo receives an annual research grant of approximately KRW 100 million from EPRI in the United States. Recognizing that the establishment and revision of international technical standards require continuous years of research and development, SeoulTech and EPRI have agreed to collaborate over the next several years to enhance nuclear power plant core equipment safety evaluation technology and the ASME Code.
