The SeoulTech Industrial and Systems Engineering Department received the top grade in the 2018 Joongang Daily University Evaluation.

The department was evaluated based on two criteria: “Professors' Abilities and Research Conditions” and “Students’ Educational Conditions and Achievements.” The highest grade is awarded to the top 10%, the second-highest to those within the first 25%, and the next to those within the first 50%.

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering received excellent evaluation results in the scholarship for tuition index (3rd place) and in the index for international dissertation papers (5th place), ranking alongside Korea University (Seoul) and Yonsei University (Seoul).

This year's science and engineering evaluation considered the Energy, Nuclear Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Nursing departments of 63 major four-year universities. The results are expected to be announced at the end of October.

At the top of the Industrial Engineering Departments (34 schools) were Seoul National University (Industrial Engineering), POSTECH (Industrial Management Engineering), and KAIST (Industrial and Systems Engineering). Next came Hanyang University (ERICA), Dongguk University (Seoul), Pusan National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Soongsil University, Incheon University, Chonnam National University, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, which all ranked above average.

The head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Professor Lee Hak-yeon, commented: “The excellent competence of our department and the excellent research results of our faculty are already well recognized in the industry and academia. Currently, we are pursuing educational innovation centered on Data Science, which is a periodic study of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Our research results are continuously improving in both quantity and quality, starting with those of the graduate program in the Data Science Department. We expect better results in future evaluations."

The results of this year's evaluation of science and engineering departments were calculated as follows: 12 indicators, including 6 indicators of professors' competence and conditions and 6 indicators of students’ education conditions and achievements, adding up to a total score of 200.

In addition to Industrial Engineering, Hanyang University (Energy Engineering) and UNIST (Energy Engineering) ranked first in the Energy and Nuclear Engineering category (22 schools). The Kyungbook National University Department of Energy Engineering, the KAIST Nuclear and Quantum Engineering Department, and the UNIST Nuclear Engineering Department also received the top grade. Following down the list were Seoul National University (Nuclear Engineering), Kyunghee University, Seoul National University (Energy and Resources Engineering), Seoul National University (Nuclear Engineering), Inha University, and Jeju University.

In the Nursing category (37 schools), Catholic University, Ajou University, and Jeju University took the top ranks. Gangwon National University, Gyeongsang National University, Tongmyong University, Pusan National University, Inha University, Jeonju University, Chungang University, and Chungnam National University ranked next, followed by Gangwon University (Samcheok), Kyungpook University, Kyunghee University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Ewha Womans University.

The JoongAng Daily announced, “The value of each index was based on data from university public information disclosure and research results from the Korea Research Foundation. We have improved our accuracy by confirming our own values for each university.”
