SeoulTech Professor Lee Kyung Chun’s Research Team Receives the Best Paper Award at IEEE WCNC 2020
Received the top award at the wireless communications networking competition through their next generation communications technology paper

SeoulTech Electrical Information Engineering Major Professor Lee Kyung Chun’s research team received the Best Paper Award at the world’s leading communications research competition.

Professor Lee Kyung Chun and doctoral candidate Eduard Elias Bahingayi’s paper received the Best Paper Award at IEEE’s WCNC 2020. IEEE WCNC is one of the top academic competitions in which important research in the wireless communications field is presented. Only four papers were selected for the Best Paper Award among the approximately 400 papers presented at IEEE WCNC 2020.

Professor Lee Kyung Chun’s research team focused on creating hybrid beams combining digital and analog beams through a massive MIMO system, which is one of the key technologies of 5G and 6G communications. Professor Lee’s team proposed a new method of hybrid-beam generation and proved that transmission speeds were the same using 1/100 of the calculations compared to pre-existing technologies. 

Professor Lee said, “The use of multiple antennas in order to increase the reliability of communications and transmission speeds in next generation communications systems is inevitable and there are problems with energy consumption and the over complication of calculations. The results of this paper allow for decreased calculation complexity and show that there are almost no decreases in performance capabilities compared to previous research efforts.”

The research was funded by the High Capacity and Low Complexity Hybrid Beam Generation Technology Research project by the Engineering Base Research Support project and the Cloud-Based Energy Block Fusion Smart Energy Town Platform (Electrical Information Technology Institute) University-Based Institute Research Support Project by the Korea Research Foundation.
