Future-ready spaces to include digital studios, media centers, and more
Seoul National University of Science & Technology (Seoul Tech) is set to build a new library that redefines the traditional concept of a library centered on books, transforming it into a people-centered multicultural space that supports communication, creativity, and relaxation. Guided by the themes Unique Library, Exciting Library, and “My Library, the project aims to create a vibrant environment that serves as more than just a study space.
The new facility will consist of six floors (one underground and five above ground), encompassing a total floor area of 14,793 square meters. Construction is slated to begin in August 2024, with completion expected by December 2026. The total project budget is estimated at KRW 45.8 billion.
More than a place for reading and studying, the new library will serve as an open, interactive space where people can freely gather, share ideas, and enjoy diverse cultural activities. Designed with a minimalist layout and open architecture, the building will offer a welcoming and comfortable experience for all users. The flexible spatial layout will accommodate a variety of uses, including exhibitions, lectures, educational programs, and reading groups. Key facilities will include a digital studio, editing and production studio, learning commerce zone, and media information center.
A void space connecting two floors will feature bold visual elements, serving as both a photogenic landmark and a symbol of the library’s identity. Additional design touches—such as an aesthetically functional signage system, contemporary furniture, and soothing lighting—will further enhance the space.
A Seoul Tech official noted, “Situated at the end of Hyanghak-ro near the Bungeobang pond, the new library will serve as both a geographic and emotional hub for our students. Its interior offers scenic views of the pond, while the exterior has been designed to naturally integrate into the campus landscape, making it a new architectural landmark.” By expanding the role of the library into a place that brings people together and encourages them to stay, Seoul Tech aims to establish a new model for academic libraries—one that fosters communication, community, and a sense of belonging.
