SeoulTech ranked 19th in the 2018 Joongang Ilbo University Evaluation, entering the top ten for the first time. It ranked second among national universities and placed two ranks higher than last year in the overall evaluation.

The Joongang Ilbo University Evaluation assessed four-year universities around the country based on a total of 32 indicators (out of 300 points) within four categories: faculty research, educational conditions, student education and performance, and reputation. SeoulTech ranked high in the student education and performance (9th) and reputation (17th) categories.

In the student education and performance categories, SeoulTech ranked high in ratio of entrepreneurship education (1st), graduate-to-venture start-up ratio (4th), and abandonment rate (9th). In the educational environment and faculty research categories, SeoulTech ranked high in scholarship to tuition ratio (7th) and international paper citation counts (4th).

SeoulTech was especially prominent for its graduate start-up activities. In the category ratio of venture start-ups to graduates (based on founders under 39 years old with start-ups founded within the last seven years), SeoulTech ranked fourth. Entrepreneurship courses are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate (master’s and doctorate) levels. The campus entrepreneurship office is open 24 hours a day, offering students opportunities for start-up endeavors at all times.

Planning Department Director Lee Soo-young said, “SeoulTech’s selection as an autonomous improvement university in the Ministry of Education’s biannual University Competency Diagnosis is the fruit of each and every SeoulTech community member’s effort to develop our institute.” He added, “In recent years, we have been working hard to improve the quality of our research and the educational conditions at SeoulTech. We look forward to further growth.”

The Joongang Ilbo University Evaluation saw its 25th anniversary this year. It considered fifty-seven major universities with four or more departments in the humanities, social sciences, or engineering sciences. The results of the research were graded out of 300 points distributed across 32 indicators, including research results, student employment and performance, teaching efforts, educational conditions, and reputation. Public data such as university-disclosed information were used, and qualitative data were excluded. The data were verified by each university.
