Selected as an engineering education innovation leading center by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for the “Project to Support the Education of Creative-Fusion Engineering Talents”

- The ministry will provide KRW 300 million annually in project funding for 4 years until 2021.

On March 27, the Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech) (President Kim Jongho) was selected as an “Engineering Education Innovation Leading Center” for the “Project to Support the Education of Creative-Fusion Engineering Talents” supervised by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The project’s aim is to educate creative engineering talents and enhance the global competitiveness of Korea’s engineering education through the development and management of engineering education programs that fit the industrial demand and the characteristics of each university.

Having been selected for the project, SeoulTech will receive KRW 300 million in project funding for the next four years from the ministry. The university plans to use the funds to develop and offer education specialized to new promising future industries; anticipatively educate an expert workforce for new industries; and share its experiences to other engineering education innovation centers.

Regarding the university’s ambitious goals, Director Ju Won-jong of the Engineering Education Innovation Leading Center said: “SeoulTech has successfully played the role of an innovative hub for universities participating in the project by managing fusion programs since 2007; holding international Capstone Design contests; spreading the Capstone Design for a multidisciplinary approach; spreading co-op programs and supporting the establishment of the Learning Factory for participating universities; and spreading other innovative models in engineering education. The center will reflect the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, reinforce its role and function as a leading center, and efficiently connect with engineering communities to create a large innovation ecosystem in the future.”

SeoulTech’s Engineering Education Innovation Leading Center plans to pursue the following:
▲ Education of experts in the Internet of Things (IoT) sensor / semiconductor processing technology (microelectromechanical system (MEMS));
▲ Creation of Capstone Design models based on disruptive technology;
▲ Management of an academy for enhanced competency in engineering innovation and a leaders’ group in engineering education innovation;
▲ Implementation of a program and holding of contests for fusion-competency enhancement in line with corporate demand; and
▲ Holding of engineering festivals.

The ministry is providing about KRW 200 million in project funding to 58 universities nationwide each in 2018 and is managing the Project for Engineering Education Innovation Centers. Among them, six universities were selected (Korea University, Pusan National University, SeoulTech, Sungkyunkwan University, Yeungnam University, and Chonbuk National University) as engineering education innovation leading centers, which will receive an additional KRW 300 million support in project funding annually.

SeoulTech has carried out the Project for Engineering Education Innovation Foothold Centers (KRW 250 million annually), as well as the first and second stages of the Project for Engineering Education Innovation Centers (KRW 200 million annually) since 2007. Beginning in 2018, the university changed the projects into the Project to Support the Education of Creative-Fusion Engineering Talents and has pursued this project continuously for 12 years. Thus, at the “Engineering Education Fiesta,” the largest event in the engineering field, the university received the honor of winning the “University of the Year” award for the third consecutive year since 2015.
