President Kim Jong Ho's full speech

“SeoulTech, leading change with creative passion”

Students of SeoulTech, I sincerely congratulate you on your honorable graduation today. Today, the fall commencement ceremony for the 2017 academic year celebrates the graduation of 51 doctoral, 194 master’s, and 531 bachelor students. As alumni of Seoul National University of Science and Technology, in each of your respective fields, you will be contributing to the development of your community, your country, and the world.

It is my honor to have witnessed how each of you have spent your days at school with determination and dedication for the future. You’ve come a long way. I must also express my gratitude to your parents, family members, and loved ones who have supported you throughout your journey here.

Graduates of SeoulTech, Seoul National University of Science and Technology celebrated its 108th anniversary this year. Our university takes pride in being the national university with the longest history, producing over 100,000 graduates. We have made remarkable progress while you were at school, coming to rank in the top twenty domestic colleges in various rankings. SeoulTech has also come to rank within the top 800 international universities, in the top third percentile. This is an indicator of the excellence and global competitiveness of our schools and alumni. The students here today are the basis of these tremendous achievements. I sincerely thank all of you for the remarkable development of our university. We, the members of SeoulTech, will continue to work hard to consistently develop SeoulTech into a school you can be proud of.

Graduates, as I commend your graduation, we must also, regretfully, acknowledge the challenging situation that awaits us outside campus. As you may know, our nation has been experiencing difficult economic times. With a current economic growth of under 3%, jobs are not as available as they were in the high-growth era of the past. Unfortunately, it won’t be easy to find employment opportunities that meet your expectations, and these challenges might last for some time.

Graduates, modern society’s first industrial revolution was sparked by the steam engine. Thereafter, the second industrial revolution lay in mass production through the use of electricity. The third industrial revolution was brought about by IT, and as we speak, the fourth industrial revolution is currently transforming our society. Future scholars anticipate that the fourth industrial revolution will involve the utilization of artificial intelligence, robots, the Internet, mobile technology, 3D printers, unmanned automobiles, and nano and biotechnology. These changes will not only revolutionize the operating systems of our industries, but also our lifestyles, creating a highly connected society of intelligence. As artificial intelligence technology enables systems to make reasonable decisions based on Big Data, robots will unavoidably replace humans in industries. While efficiency and productivity may increase dramatically, paradoxically, the jobs available to us will inevitably decrease.

Future scholars believe that this future could be detrimental, but that it could also represent a great opportunity for those who are prepared. I urge you to take advantage of this change. Continue to develop your ability to adapt to change through lifelong learning, and broaden your scope of knowledge into other fields. The time when a college degree was regarded as the completion of education is long gone.

The future will offer opportunities to those who constantly prepare for change. The future is not what we predict, but what we choose. Your education here will have equipped you with the foundations. The Fourth Industrial Revolution may not have taken full effect yet, but considering the dynamics of our society, we will soon witness the advent of abrupt changes. I urge you to become lifelong learners capable of applying your knowledge and of inventing yourselves as you foresee the waves of change.

Proud graduates of SeoulTech, I hope you will become leaders of society, full of pride and love for your alma mater. Your effort and success will testify to the high standards of SeoulTech, and this reputation will in turn open new doors for you.

Throughout the years, our university has come a long way. SeoulTech will continue to develop in the future, and I would like to ask for your encouragement and support. The development of a university is not limited to being a member of the faculty, staff, or student body. The active participation of alumni is absolutely essential to the development of our institution. I sincerely wish you who graduate today to go on to represent Korea as acknowledged professionals, entrepreneurs, managers, and scholars. When you meet alumni in society, I urge you to form networks of support and assistance.

Our valued graduates, I hope your time on campus has given you beautiful and precious memories. I hope you will continue to care for and love your alma mater as you cherish these memories. SeoulTech will support you wholeheartedly.

Once again, I sincerely congratulate you on your graduation and wish you success and happiness in your future.
