SeoulTech’s AFMaster Team Wins the Excellence Prize at the Industrial Convergence Idea Competition
Selected among 47 teams from the 2018 Korea Industrial Technology R&D Competition

The AFMaster team (Supervising professor: Kim Kwan-rae from Manufacturing Systems and Design Engineering (MSDE) program; team members: MSDE Program students Park Sung-bum, Lee Jae-hyung, Lee Seung-hyun, Lee Yoo-jin, and Song Min Joo of the Design Department) composed of undergraduate MSDE and design students won the Excellence Prize at the National University Industrial Convergence Idea Competition.

Hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and sponsored by the Soongsil Fusion Research Institute, the event recruited ideas in May 2018 and selected its final winner during the competition held from December 5th to 6th at COEX.

A total of 47 teams from universities all around the nation participated. The team AFMaster, consisting of students from SeoulTech, was awarded the Korea Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management Award for Excellence in the Smart Automation Sample Stage for the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) division.

The Smart Automation Sample Stage for AFM aims to combat ineffective research processes in AFM studies that require multifaceted observations. Ideas that were developed were an automatic return function of specimen that deviates from the observation range after rotation, and a 360-degree rotation function using a worm wheel gear and a circular cross roller.

The AFMaster team presented a feasible mechanical motion process and automation program despite the challenges of such a detailed process and it was highly appreciated by judges and industry insiders.
